RESEARCH ON QR CODES

It is seen that most of the QR codes that are used on books and magazines are placed at the end of the pages. Most of them are for exclusive use like accessing to special offers or an audible version of the printed material.
--> make people think that they are time wasting
Is it possible if QR codes become a essential tool when you read printed materials, instead of acting only as an assistance or providing extra offers?

QR codes:
  • QR is short for Quick Response (they can be read quickly by a cell phone). They are used to take a piece of information from a transitory media and put it in to your cell phone.

  • QR Codes allow readers to scan a Code with their smartphone and access things like content or an exclusive offers
  • mostly used as advertising
pros
  • QR Codes for bridging the gap between printed and online advertising campaigns.
  • This method has the dual benefit of offering a more comprehensive and guided purchasing experience as well as streamlining the printed adverts themselves. By removing the need to include large amounts of product info, advertisers are freer to focus on the visual impact of the advert.

cons
  • QR codes often get a bad rap these days. The ugly little boxes appear everywhere and to many, they seem to be a waste of time and space.
  • as most of the QR codes are being boxed, they look awkward on a page. They do not fit in to the page and people tend to think that they are space wasting.
  • can QR codes be decorated in order to look more interesting on a page?
convenience
  • how do we make it easy to watch the video instead of just reading about it in the paperback version?

convenience
  • With iOS 11, simply open the camera app and point the camera towards the QR code. The camera easily and automatically picks up the QR code. The QR code does not have to be centered - the camera app will capture the QR code from any angle. A popup will appear at the top of the screen stating, "Website QR code. Open 'goo.gl' in Safari."  Tap on this to activate the QR code.

  • Link directly to a URL—sends your customer to a URL of your choosing. From a URL, there are a various things your customer can do:
  • Discounts/Coupons
  • Access additional information about product
  • Enter sweepstakes
  • Sign up to receive more information
  • Access video
  • Make a purchase
  • Interact with social media

as graphic designers:
what if QR codes become part of the design?
With the assistance of QR codes, audience can get to reach a wider information platform while reading printed materials. This allows designers to have more space when designing the page as less information would have to be put on the page.

How can I make QR codes look more fun?
ADDING COLOURS
  • The only rule of thumb is that the code color should generally be dark and placed against a light-colored background. Make sure the contrast is sufficient, or the code will be difficult to scan.
SOFTENING HARD EDGES
  • One of the QR code’s greatest aesthetic flaws is its numerous hard edges. You can dramatically lessen the severity of this look by strategically rounding some corners. It is not necessary to round all of the corners, but softening up the edges will definitely make the code appear more friendly and approachable.
ADDING IMAGES WITHIN QR CODES

  • If you decide to add in a logo to create a 3D feel for your QR code, you need to decide which part of the coding to obstruct with your logo. The key to creating these eye-popping designer codes is to take advantage of the fact that up to 30% of a QR code’s data can be missing or obstructed, and still be scanned.
